His masterpiece was the invention of Bitcoin, a ‘digital-gold’ many agree is the most innovative store of value ever created and has transformed the way money and currencies operate globally. Yet Bitcoin’s origin story is largely unknown. So too is the story of how and why its clandestine creator simply vanished just 23 months after its inception and has not been heard from since early 2011. Did he die? Was he killed? Or did he just walk away on principle?
